What started as a simple Chevelle project evolved into a complete reimagining of a classic American muscle car. Built for owner John Gamble, this award-winning Chevelle combines modern performance, handcrafted fabrication and long-distance drivability while remaining true to the spirit of the original.

John already owned a serious muscle car — a big-block 1966 Chevelle delivering all the raw power and attitude you'd expect from a traditional street machine.

The problem wasn't that he needed another muscle car. He wanted something different. A car his wife and daughters could comfortably enjoy. A car capable of road trips, weekend events and long-distance cruising. Something reliable, comfortable and easy to drive, without losing the presence and character that made him love Chevrolets in the first place. The challenge was creating a car that felt just as special, but in a completely different way.

Working closely with John, the project evolved into a modern grand touring muscle car. Rather than simply chasing horsepower, every decision was made around usability, reliability and enjoyment. A 6.0-litre Chevrolet L77 V8 was selected to provide modern performance and drivability, paired with a rebuilt 6L80E six-speed automatic transmission for effortless cruising. With 461 horsepower at the wheels, the finished package delivers strong performance when required while remaining comfortable and approachable for everyday driving. The result is a car that can be enjoyed by the entire family, whether heading to a local event or exploring New Zealand's open roads.

Performance was only part of the brief. To create a car that inspired confidence behind the wheel, the suspension, steering and braking systems were completely upgraded idetech coilovers, tubular control arms and a four-link rear suspension transformed the way th hevelle behaves on the road, while large Wilwood brakes provide stopping power to match thE upgraded performance. Instead of feeling like a fifty-year-old muscle car, the finished vehicle feels composed, predictable and enjoyable to drive - exactly as intended.

One of the defining features of this build is the extensive fabrication work carried out by the Real Rides team.

John had always felt there were aspects of the factory Chevelle design that could be improved, but modifying his original '66 was never an option.

This project provided the opportunity.

Custom steel sill extensions were fabricated to conceal the chassis rails, while the front valance, splitter, rear bumper treatment and lower rear bodywork were all redesigned to create a cleaner and more purposeful appearance.

Additional refinements included sharpened swage lines, side marker deletions and custom solutions to conceal the fuel tank from view.

Importantly, every modification was handcrafted in steel, ensuring the finished result feels cohesive, refined and true to the original design.

The custom PPG blue paint transformed the Chevelle's presence and became one of its defining features.

Combined with bespoke bronze accents and custom MTN Forged wheels, the colour helps bridge the gap between classic muscle and modern styling.

The result is a car that attracts attention wherever it goes while remaining timeless in its execution.

Inside, the focus remained firmly on comfort and usability.

Custom seating, handcrafted interior trim, a bespoke centre console and Dakota Digital instrumentation create an environment designed for real-world driving.

Every detail supports the original goal of the build: creating a car that is as enjoyable to spend time in as it is to look at.

While the awards are appreciated, they were never the reason for the build.

The real success of this Chevelle is how it has been used.

Designed to be enjoyed by the whole family, it has already become part of some of life's most important moments, including serving as the bridal car at John's daughter's wedding.

It's exactly what the project set out to achieve — a car that creates memories as well as turning heads.

The quality of the build has been recognised across some of New Zealand's premier automotive events.
